Sony has released its latest annual report (Q2 FY2021) and reports that the PlayStation 5 had been delivered 13.3 million times worldwide by the end of September 2021. From the beginning of July to the end of September, 3.3 million copies of the new console were delivered. Sales of the PlayStation 4 fell to 200,000 in the three months mentioned (previous year: 1.5 million). The PlayStation 4 is now 116.6 million copies delivered. For comparison: Microsoft no longer publishes hardware sales figures, but speaks of a significant increase in Xbox sales compared to the previous year. Nintendo has not yet presented any new figures (as of the end of June 2021: 89 million Switch sales).
Software sales on PS4 and PS5 fell from 81.8 million (FY2020) to 76.4 million (FY2021) copies in the second quarter. 7.6 million sales are attributable to first-party titles, i.e. games that were developed directly by PlayStation Studios (previous year: 12.8 million). Digital downloads of full versions of games accounted for 62 percent of software sales, compared with 59 percent in the previous year.
The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers was 47.2 million on September 30, 2021 – 1.3 million more than in the same period of the previous financial year.
