Age of Empires 4: Big Winter Update is imminent

Fans of the strategy game Age of Empires 4 can expect an extensive update soon. So far there is no specific release date for this so-called winter update, but the release is definitely planned for next week. The patch notes are still a long time coming, but the first details are already available.

In total, the Relic Entertainment developers are working on more than 100 changes, bug fixes and optimizations. Furthermore, they take another look at the balance of the units: It is planned to strengthen the crossbowmen and spearmen in the fight against the cavalry. In this way, they should pose a greater threat to the mounted armed forces in the future. The French Hulk ships, on the other hand, are being weakened in order to break their dominance on the high seas. In addition, some requests from the ranks of the community have been implemented, such as the optional display of scores or adjustments to the minimap.

Incidentally, the development team warns in advance that old savegames and replays can no longer be used after installing the winter update. The campaign progress and the content activated there should not be affected.
Here is an overview of the changes known so far:

  • French Hulk ship tweaked to no longer rule the high seas.
  • Crossbowmen, Spearman and Elite Crossbowmenâ ¯willâ ¯pose a greater threat to Cavalry.
  • Significantly reducing the cost of the Chinese civilization’s Repeater crossbow.
  • Fix to HRE Prelate unit to allow them to continue inspiring after being pushed.
  • Mongol “Superior Mobility” adjustedâ ¯to ensure the speed modifier is appropriately applied. Thanks to the community for calling this out!
  • Fix issued forâ ¯the Rus civilization to eliminate infinite Relic duplication.

Age of Empires 4 was released for PC on October 28, 2021 and is also playable as part of Xbox Game Pass. You can find the test on here.
