Overloaded servers, missing characters, and emergency maintenance

Today’s sales launch of Diablo 2: Resurrected was probably a little too much for the Battle.net servers. Since the release of the remake, there have been increasing reports of problems with the creation of characters in online mode and, in some cases, of the disappearance of created characters without a trace. Blizzard Entertainment performed initial maintenance work on the servers at 7:00 p.m. and at 10 p.m. the servers were shut down again for emergency maintenance. The downtime should be around 45 minutes. Offline games should be possible once you have authenticated your game.

Rod Fergusson (Executive Producer of the Diablo series) wrote on Twitter that the rush of players was too big for the servers. They are already working on increasing the server capacity, it said. Any server restarts should also be possible.
