Double Fine’s Psychonauts 2 was arguably one of the biggest Xbox success stories of 2021 (Phil Spencer even suggested it was their game of the year), but now the team is shifting its focus to new projects.
In an update to Fig (as highlighted by the VGC), it was explained that Psychonauts 2 “basically ended up as a project”, and now the studio is splitting into teams to work on different projects “which we think you’ll like. “
“Psychonauts 2 essentially ended up as a project, although there are tweaks and fixes as we go along. The studio is already splitting into multiple teams and starting different projects that we think you’ll like. We love to experiment here at Double Fine. Each game is a chance to explore new ideas, new visual or gameplay styles, emotions and more. “
Double Fine’s message went on to say that team members “think the payoff was too big” with Psychonauts 2, stating that they “kept the plateau”. We certainly agree, it’s basically my favorite game of the year!
Double Fine’s main focus now with regard to Psychonauts 2 is to get the remaining Fig rewards sent to sponsors, who have been facing some issues so far due to issues related to COVID-19:
“Our focus moves to these new projects, but we’re also intensively monitoring support tickets received on our way and working with distributors to get people’s rewards as soon as our strange world allows. These are still somewhat uncertain times, where even something like paper can be out of stock and affect the production of goods. By the end of the year, I hope each of you can enjoy some rest and comfort with family and friends. “
