Square Enix reveals new information about the Souls detour in the Final Fantasy universe

Square Enix has released new details on Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. The title is a Souls-like game set in the world of Final Fantasy by the Nioh makers Team Ninja. Stranger of Paradise will not be a prequel to Final Fantasy 1, but rather a reinterpretation of the game series.

The story will focus on the hero Jack, whose quest is to destroy the chaos and bring the light back to the crystals of Cornelia. At IGN’s colleagues, Square Enix introduced Captain Bikke, a pirate that Jack and his companions will encounter. You will meet Bikke on a ship anchored in the Pravoka Seagrot, a new location in the game. The pirate captain wields a two-handed ax in battle. Other characters featured include Cornelia’s royal family, consisting of the King, Queen Jayne, and their daughters Sarah and Mia.

Square Enix also discussed what is known as the “Break Gauge System”. In a way, you can see this as a variant of a stamina bar, but there are a few important differences to classic variants: First of all, attacks, sprints and the use of special abilities do not reduce the display, as one would expect from a typical stamina bar. Instead, it drops if the player blocks an attack, uses soul protection technology, or takes a hit.

If the player attacks, combos and skill attacks in turn reduce the opponent’s display. If the display is exhausted, you can defeat the opponent with a single blow. There is also a new ability called “Soul Shield” that absorbs an opponent’s attacks and allows players to shoot them straight back at them.

Similar to the campfire in Dark Souls, there will be checkpoint cubes that will revive the player should they die. The player is only revived on the die on which he was last healed. But be careful: All monsters in the area are also revived when the player is healed – as known from the From software classics.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is scheduled for March 18, 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStaion 4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One and PC (exclusively from the Epic Games Store).
