The sixth early access update is ready and the new features at a glance


The fairly large Early Access Update # 6 (“Forging the Arcane”) has been released for Baldur’s Gate 3. It includes the new Grymforge region, the magician as a playable class, more actions for ranged and melee weapons and an extensive revision of the graphics.

The sorcerer is introduced as a new class. The two unique subclasses are “Wild Magic” and “Draconic Bloodline”. Wild magic revolves around chaos and manipulates the forces of chance to gain an advantage on attack rolls, skill tests, or saving throws – and potentially triggering a random effect in the process. Wizards with draconian bloodlines can channel the powers of their dragon ancestors and use fire, lightning, acid, poison or cold damage in combat, for example. Metamagic is the wizard’s trademark, which is used to customize the spells in the heat of the moment. You can, for example, increase the range, extend its duration or hit two enemies at the same time – among other variations of the spell.

New spells including:

  • “Horrific Visage: A tadpole action that causes the opponent to bleed and allows the wizard to deprive him of a spell point.
  • Enlarge / Reduce: This spell changes the size of a character and affects their physical stats.
  • Chromatic Orb: A powerful single-target spell that allows wizards to hurl an orb of energy at their enemies.
  • Cloud of Daggers: This spell protects the caster and surrounds them with a cloud of flying daggers.
  • Crown of Madness: As the name suggests, this spell drives an enemy insane and can cause them to attack their allies nearby. “

Larian Studios have added new weapon actions to the role-playing game, which can give ranged and melee weapons up to three (potentially fatal) actions. Non-magically gifted classes should have more options in combat as long as they master the weapon. These include heart stopper (blow to the opponent’s chest: damage and possible reduction of his actions by one), debilitating blow (disadvantage with attack throws), crippling blow (preventing movement), piercing blow or shot (may leave a wound) , Flourish (throwing opponents off balance) or a modification of the damage dice by using movement points.

The sixth update also includes an extensive revision of the graphics. The entire lighting system is renewed – also with volumetric fog and volumetric lighting. Translucency (partial light permeability of a body), atmospheric scattering by particles in the air, dynamic clouds as well as local and directional light sources are new. The color gradation and HDR rendering have also been improved. All particles are also illuminated by the environment and the global light source. From now on, the role-playing game also supports DLSS 2.3 from Nvidia and AMD FSR as upscaling solutions for higher refresh rates. The characters or the models of the figures get dirty, sweaty or bloody during their adventures. New orchestral music as well as new songs in the menu and in the warehouse have also been added. In addition, many bug fixes, general improvements, balance adjustments and usability optimizations were made.
