Xbox is trying to ‘undermine and dominate’ the gaming industry, TV host argues

Here we go, and more attacks come. American TV presenter and comedian Adam Conover went a bit viral overnight due to his thoughts on the “monopolization” from the gaming industry by Microsoft, claiming that he is worried about the future.

In a video posted to Twitter and TikTok, Conover explained that he felt the “huge cash advantage” from Microsoft meant that the company could adopt the “Amazon strategy” of selling games at a loss, putting them all on the Xbox Game Pass e “eliminating competition” in the process. He called PlayStation in particular on alert.

You can watch the full video below – be warned it contains some profanity:

If you’d rather summarize the main part of the video rather than watch it all, here’s what he had to say:

“Microsoft could lose money indefinitely. So indefinitely, they can sell the maldito consul and Game Pass for just $25 a month. That’s an amazing deal, but it’s one of those deals that we can say later, ooh — that the deal was a little too good to be true, because it could mean that Microsoft would wipe out all competition in the video game space and then would be able to raise prices on us and also do much worse games.

“And let’s not forget that all this consolidation will naturally lead to layoffs e worse conditions for workers. Microsoft is not trying to be ‘the Netflix of games’, they are trying to be the Amazon of games, they want to use their huge cash advantage to Undermine and dominate the entire gaming industry. This is bad for video game makers and gamers, and as someone who loves video games, I am worried.”

As you can imagine, Conover’s strong thoughts resulted in a variety of responses, some of which took his side on the matter and others that acknowledged his points but identified some flaws:

Tom Warren, Senior Editor at The Verge

“There are reasons to be concerned about subscription services like Xbox Game Pass, but the basic idea that Microsoft doesn’t have to worry about being profitable with its gaming business is [confusa]…”

Parris Lilly, podcast host:

“Sometimes I think we try too hard to find something wrong. Think Microsoft is secretly looking to undermine and drive the competition out of the market? No. I think they’re pushing Game Pass to be their primary way of delivering content across platforms? Yea.”

Destin Legarie, Director of Video Content Strategy at IGN:

“Adam basically said Xbox is a monopoly and you should be scared! Before saying that Nintendo is fine. Did not mention that Tencent will be fine. Amazon games will be fine. But Sony, which has been breaking records for several years, is ‘f* *ked’.”
